A Brief History of English Breakfast Tea

But how did breakfast tea become such an integral part of our mornings? Let’s take a look at the history behind this beloved beverage.

The Rise of Black Tea Blends

Breakfast teas originated as blends of black teas from India and Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). These teas were known for their bold flavour and caffeine boostโ€”perfect for jump-starting the day.

To create their signature blends, tea merchants would mix together different types of black tea in order to achieve the desired flavour profile. One of the earliest recorded breakfast blends was created in the 1830s by a Scottish grocer named Drysdale & Co., who combined Assam and Ceylon teas to create what they called โ€œScotch Tea Mixture.โ€ This blend became so popular that other companies soon followed suit, creating their own unique takes on breakfast mixtures.

English Breakfast Tea Emerges

In 1843, Robert Drysdale introduced his own version of Scotch Tea Mixture called โ€œEnglish Breakfast Teaโ€โ€”and it quickly caught on with customers all over England. By the end of the 19th century, English Breakfast was one of the most popular teas in England and America alikeโ€”and it remains so today. The traditional blend consists mostly of strong Assam teas blended with lighter Ceylon varietiesโ€”but every brand has its own unique twist on this classic recipe
